Water Filters for the Home

Water filtration is essential to secure a pure water supply for the home. Even though the U.S. water supply is among the safest in the world, people can still catch waterborne diseases and be affected by chemicals in community water supplies. To get a good idea about your own water supply, it is a good idea to get a water test kit. Tests are usually inexpensive and can be informative and helpful in deciding if you need a filtration system, and if so, what kind of system you might need.

Even if a test should show your water to be high quality, adding a filtration system will make it even safer. Water supplies can vary in quality over time depending on source, time of year, climate, weather, and even who is manning the fort at the water supply facility. It is also true that chemicals such as chlorine and flourine are added to kill germs and prevent tooth decay. The full effects of these chemicals on the human body are not known, and some believe may even be detrimental to health.

The best starting place for home filtration is to make sure the water used for drinking and cooking is pure. An undersink water filter unit in the kitchen will do the trick. Even so, this will not completely secure the kitchen water supply because this filter is usually too slow for washing dishes and other kitchen cleaning taskes. Another good place for a water filter is in the shower. The chlorine and chemicals in the water are dispersed into the air by the action of a shower. These chemicals can be breathed in and cause elevated levels of chlorine in the blood supply.

Probably the best overall solution to home filtration is a whole house water filter. This will overcome most possible hazards. However, it is still desireable to not use the hot water tap for drinking or cooking, because hot water in the pipes promotes leaching of any heavy metals that might be in the pipes, especially in older homes that might have used lead based solder.

Finally, when you are away from home a portable water filtration system will extend supply protection from any possible contamination problems. The benefits of pure, clean water is manifest and obvious. It only makes sense to ensure water quality by filtration.
